"Rugrats in Paris - The Movie," is the fifth collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. The "Rugrats" series on Nickelodeon, was created by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo and Paul Germain and premiered in the U.S. in August, 1991. It began airing internationally in 1992. The series, which is a three-time Emmy Award winner as well as a 1993 CableACE award winner, has grown into a billion dollar evergreen franchise property for Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon launched its most extensive consumer products initiative to date when it launched a comprehensive merchandising program for "Rugrats" which includes toys, home video, CD-ROMs, interactive video games, books, apparel, a live tour, comic strip and comic adventures magazine. ABOUT THE PRODUCTION The Rugrats clan found adventure and thrills in their first feature film, "The Rugrats Movie" and now in "Rugrats in Paris -The Movie," they head overseas on a terrific new journey. Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures have joined forces once again on an animated feature film, the second motion picture based on Nickelodeon's award-winning "Rugrats" series. "`Rugrats in Paris - The Movie' is a continuation of the Rugrats' adventures as first brought to the big screen in 'The Rugrats Movie' that takes then further than they've ever gone, figuratively and literally," says Albie Her-ht, president of Film and TV Entertainment for Nickelodeon, and one of the producers of the movie. Unlike its big screen predecessor, which featured fantastical sequences that harked back to classic adventure films, "Rugrats in Paris - The Movie" packs all the fascination and wonder that comes when an entire family travels to a foreign land, combined with the strong feelings and sense of discovery that often accompanies a journey. Although this kind of travel experience is often felt strongly yet differently between parents and kids, the themes in "Rugrats in Paris" will undoubtedly resonate with both. Says "Rugrats in Paris" director Stig Bergqvist, "What is unique about the Rugrats is their broad appeal. We have in this movie a great story played on two different levels. One seen through the eyes of the babies and one from the adults." "This is a motion picture in the true sense of the word," says director Paul Demeyer. "The story line is very poignant, and Paris provides a dramatic backdrop that we are accenting with incredible action. It's very exciting to work on a project that you know kids and adults will see and appreciate. And we owe it to the Rugrats fans to give them a great movie." Adds Bergqvist, "We've had two great years developing this story and seeing it come alive on the big screen. Our biggest challenge was creating an intelligent and emotionally strong film that's entertaining for the whole family." "Rugrats in Paris" also presented a technical challenge for the film's directors. Says Bergqvist, "We needed to meet the needs of mixing hand drawn and computer generated animation. We wanted our CGI characters to have the same quirky and warm feel as the babies. We ended up retouching by hand almost everything that was animated in the computer to get this effect." The Rugrats have proven time and time again that they appeal not only to kids, but to parents as well. By adding the voices of respected actors such as Susan Sarandon (who voices the Rugrats' Parisian nemesis, Coco La Bouche), John Lithgow (as her sidekick Jean-Claude) and Debbie Reynolds (as Lulu Pickles) to the mix for "Rugrats in Paris - The Movie," the world's most famous babies are set to attract an even wider following. "The more complex some of the new characters are, the more appealing they seem to be," continues Demeyer. "Susan displayed such great instincts, very dramatic, yet subtle. And she has some very funny lines. John is great - because he's such a great comedian." The renowned yet humble actor took on the challenge with his typical vigor, playing Coco's wry sidekick Jean-Claude with aplomb. As Lithgow reflects, the role was a lot of f un, but not without its own very particular set of challenges. "The most interesting thing (about the role) is that I didn't know what he would look like," admits Lithgow. "It's very curious to act a role with no idea at the time of what the character looks like. I'm putting my voice at the disposal of the animators, which is a f un new thing to do. This is a great new world for me." It's been a remarkable experience thus far, quite challenging and lots of fun," adds Sarandon. "As Coco, I'm providing the personality to someone the audience will be rooting against, which is a thrill for me and 6 my kids who are excited that their mom finally gets to play a `meany.' Coco has all the makings of a classic Hollywood villain, she's smart, yet sinister, devilish and witty in her own kind of way. The characters John and I voice have a wonderfully dysfunctional camaraderie that plays into the spirit of the film and is something kids and parents will love. Plus I get to wear all that great Japanese influenced designer clothing." Lithgow's and Sarandon's enthusiasm is magnified further by legendary actress Debbie Reynolds. "I was very excited when I received the call because `Rugrats' is my granddaughter's favorite program. I don't have a chance to watch a lot of animated shows at my age, but when I told her I was going to be in the new Rugrats movie, she was beyond excited." The anticipation for "Rugrats in Paris -The Movie" carries over into the passion the filmmakers bring to this special movie. "We're making this one even bigger and better, with a lot of action, adventure and lots of fun sequences," says producer/co-creator Gabor Csupo. "`Rugrats in Paris' has a giant scope visually. We've done extensive research on the classic architecture of Paris, and we've been able to take advantage of the romantic and well-recognized aspects of the city, and really bring them to life." Producer/co-creator Arlene Klasky adds, "We wanted to find a grand arena, some place universally known to people of all ages, and that's Paris. The script and setting underscore the city's reputation for love and culture. We've used that as a foundation for a visually contemporary look and story that will have wide appeal." Executive producer Julia Pistor echoes Csupo's thoughts while summing up the relationship between Nickelodeon and the characters' creators. "The writing is so very strong on this film, and gives parents and kids a chance to really connect on the same level. It underscores our relationship with Klasky Csupo, Inc.- we've been together for so long that `Rugrats in Paris' is not only a great new adventure for the characters, but for all of us, as well." ABOUT THE MUSIC Hold onto your berets, babies! The score to the film is the musically creative brainchild of Mark Mothersbaugh -founder of the popular '80s new wave rock 7 group Devo. Maverick Records, responsible for the hit soundtracks to "The Matrix" and "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," produced the soundtrack with George Acogny serving as music supervisor. Maverick Recording Company has assembled a fun and eclectic lineup for the gang's international road trip, a blockbuster album that perfectly captures the dazzling colors and imagery of the Rugrats' big and bouncy world. "This is an extremely exciting project for us," says Guy 0seary, Maverick partner and co-producer of the "Rugrats in Paris" soundtrack. "Rugrats is an international phenomenon and a favorite among animation fans of all ages. With that in mind, we've put together a really fun album, one that offers something for everyone." The "Rugrats in Paris" soundtrack boasts a critically acclaimed, multi-platinum roster of both global superstars and up-and coming artists including: The Baha Men ("Who Let The Dogs Out") the hit single which is currently climbing the charts, TLC vocalist Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins ("My Getaway"), Sinead O'Connor ("When You Love" produced by Wyclef Jean), Jessica Simpson ("Final Heartbreak"), Isaac Hayes ("Chuckle Chan"), Aaron Carter ("life Is A Party") and Gerri Halliwell ("These Boots Are Made For Walking"). Says George Acogny, the film's music supervisor, "Sinead's `When You Love' summarizes the whole film. It's an emotional ballad written specifically for the movie, and truly shows Sinead at her best." Also featured on the album is Maverick recording artist Amanda ("You Don't Stand A Chance"). Amanda's debut album was co-produced by Scandanavia's Merlyn Music (98 Degrees, LFO) and is due out next spring. The "Rugrats in Paris" soundtrack also includes French multi-platinum artist Mylene Farmer ("Chistoire D'Une Fee C'est..."), No Authority ("I'm Telling You This" ), aBE3 ("Excuse My French"), the film's Angelica and SaMos ("Bad Girls") and acclaimed composer/former DEVO vocalist Mark Mothersbaugh. In addition to writing "I Need A Mom" for the soundtrack (performed by Cyndi Lauper) Mothersbaugh composed the film's score. Says Acogny, "I've done many albums over the years, but putting together this soundtrack was the most fun I've ever had. Collaborating with Guy 0seary and Russ Rieger (Maverick Senior Executive) was great, at times it felt like we were in a band together. The end result is a really great pop album whose appeal runs across the board." "Music has always been an important aspect of kids' lives and an integral part of Nickelodeon, and `Rugrats in Paris - The Movie' is no exception," says executive producer Albie Hecht. "The lineup of top contemporary recording artists involved in the Rugrats movie soundtrack further highlights Nickelodeon's connection with kids, families, and pop entertainment culture. We are especially thrilled to be working with a label like Maverick, which has allowed us to build our strongest soundtrack to date." The first single and video exclusively for the soundtrack is Watkins' "My Getaway." "I'm a big fan of Tommy and Chuckie and the rest of the Rugrats, and I'm honored to be on this soundtrack," says Watkins. "The fact that I wrote the song makes this all the more special to me." The video stars Watkins, Tommy, Chuckie, and Angelica in a computer-generated clip directed by Christopher Urskin (R. Kelly, Brian McKnight). Meanwhile, "Who Let The Dogs Out?" by The Baha Men is already a smash hit and Eric Heimbold (Brian Setzer Orchestra) directed the song's video. ABOUT THE CAST SUSAN SARANDON (voice of Coco La Bouche) brings her own brand of sex appeal and intelligence to each and every role -from her fearless portrayal in "Bull Durham," to her Oscar-nominated performances in "Thelma & Louise," "Lorenzo's Oil" and "The Client," to her Academy Award-winning and SAG Award-winning role as Sister Helen Prejean, a nun counseling a death-row inmate in "Dead (Man Walking." Sarandon, the mother of three and a committed activist, chooses her parts with careful consideration, enabling her to spend more time with her family while continuing to forge a place in the hearts of moviegoers. In 1998, Sarandon starred opposite Julia Roberts and Ed Harris in "Stepmom," directed by Chris Columbus. Her recent films include Tire Robbins ' "Cradle Will Rock," Wayne Wang's "Anywhere But Here," opposite Natalie Portman and the role as a competitive diva in John Turturro's "Illuminata," an erotic farce. COCO LA BOUCHE, is the villainous manager of EuroReptarland. She is self-centered, conniving, and even though she works at the most well-loved children's amusement park in the world, she, herself, loathes children. She is very ambitious and wishes more than anything to be the sole proprietor of EuroReptarland. Coco does, however, have quite a unique fashion sensibility. Although it was JOHN LITHGOW's (voice of Jean-Claude) 1982 Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Roberto Muldoon in "The World According to Garp" that first brought Lithgow national attention, the actor has been refining his craft in films, television and theater for over twenty years. Lithgow has won critical acclaim and numerous awards for his starring role in NBC's hit comedy series "3rd Rock from the Sun." He added to his growing list of accomplishments with his recent audio release, "Singin' in the Bathtub." The disc features ILI songs that include some of his favorite songs from childhood, such as the Danny Kaye classics "Inchworm" and "Triplets," and songs from the English comedy/cabaret act Flanders & Swann. In addition, Lithgow penned "Big Kids" for the album, and wrote additional lyrics for four other songs. Notably, Lithgow addressed a completely new audience with the release of "John Lithgow's Kid-Size Concert," a 30 minute music video of children's classics and original tunes that showcases Lithgow as an actor, singer, songwriter and co-producer for BabySongs productions and Media Home Entertainment. Lithgow received his second Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Debra Winger's lover in the Oscar-winning "Terms of Endearment." Some of his other credits include "Memphis Belle," "Footloose," Brian DePalma's "Raising Cain," Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz," "Obsession," "Rich Kids," "Cliffhanger," "Harry and the Hendersons," "A Civil Action," and TNT's "Don Quixote." A Harvard graduate, Lithgow won a Fulbright Scholarship and used it to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. While in England, he interned with both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court Theatre. Lithgow then settled in New York to pursue his stage career. Ire went on to win both the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for "The Changing Room." Lithgow has recently added author to his list of talents. Simon & Shuster published his children's book, The Remarkable Farkle McBride, written by Lithgow with illustrations by C.F. Payne. The book tells the story of a child prodigy who masters every instrument he picks up, only to continually grow dissatisfied until he discovers his true love as a conductor. JEAN-CLAUDE, is Coco La Bouche's personal assistant at EuroReptarland. A flamboyant Frenchman, he is pretentious and self-involved. He also shares the same level of distaste for children as his boss Coco. Jean-Claude is a hapless servant in Madame La Bouche's self serving plots for power, but he is also quite a snappy dresser. DEBBIE REYNOLDS (voice of Lulu Pickles), a star of more than thirty motion pictures, two Broadway shows, two TV series, as well as dozens of television appearances, has been in show business for 50 incredible years. Under the not so very watchful eyes of the grown-ups, he leads his Rugrats friends on expeditions to unravel the great mysteries of life - like "where does the light go when the refrigerator door is closed?" In addition to being Tommy's best friend, Chuckie is a likeable two-year old scaredy-cat who sees monsters in every closet and worries about the hundred ways things can go wrong. Tommy's adventurous schemes often reduce Chuckie to shivers. "M-m-maybe this isn't such a good idea," he'll suggest, as the Rugrats are off to sneak into the dark and dank garage. But since Chuckie also hates being left behind, he trudges along warily. And in the process, he often surprises himself with the courage he summons Up. Like his dad, Charles Sr., Chuckie never forgets that every silver lining comes with a cloud attached. She has also done voices on "The Ren and Stimpy Show" and the feature films "Addams Family Values," in Which She was the voice of Pubert and "Baby Boom," in Which She was the voice of Baby Elizabeth. Upcoming for her is the animated series "Pigs Next Door". ANGEUCAPICKLES is Tommy's cousin and a Rugrats alumna who can talk both to grown-ups and toddlers. She's tempestuous. She's tyrannical. she's three. She manipulates her parents, shows off for strangers -and when She comes to play, the Rugrats run for cover. "You stupid babies!" she bellows as She bullies them into playing by her rules. "You don't know anything!," She Screams as she terrorizes them with "true" stories from her imagination. Even worse, She forces them to Sit Still for her off-key, lyrically mangled musical numbers. Beneath her cold, hard exterior beats the heart of a true Spoiled brat. But however cleverly devilish her schemes, Somehow Angelica a1ways seems to get the worst of it. TARA CHARENDOFF (voice of Dil Pickles) has done voices on the animated series "Batman," "101 Dalmatians" and "The Powerpuff Girls" among many others. DIL PICKLES is Tommy's new baby brother who has the personality of a typical 3-month-old: all id. He wants everything NOW and will do whatever he can to get it. And once he does get it, he won't let go of it without a fight. Dil is known to wail inconsolably when frustrated, but he'll immediately stop crying when something else attracts his attention. While his tantrums are often annoying, he has the saving grace of all babies: he's irresistibly cute. Obsessed with doing things the "right" way, Didi has read all the latest child-rearing books and watched every "flow to Raise Your Kids" video ever made. However, in her quest to be the perfect mother, Didi tends to overly worry about every little thing Tommy does or doesn't do. She is completely unaware of how much Tommy really understands and thinks. Ironically, she is often so preoccupied with trying to be the ideal mom, she fails to notice when Tommy takes off on one of his adventures. JACK RILEY (voice of Stu Pickles) has had the distinction of playing himself in the Michael Tolkin-scripted, Robert Altman directed feature film "The Player," and appeared in the Tolkin-scripted "Gleaming the Cube." Stu runs his own toy manufacturing company, Pickles Industries. His workshop is in the Pickles' basement. A dreamer, Stu loves to design new toys and invent new gadgets. Stu believes that each of his new inventions will be "the toy that's going to put Pickles Industries on the map." Because he is so absent minded, Stu is fundamentally unobservant of Tommy and Dil. Often, he loses track of the boys, allowing Tommy to crawl off on one adventure after another. MICHAEL BELL (voice of Chas Finster) wears many hats in the vocal animation world. Besides being the voice of Stokey in "Homeword Bound II, Lost in San Francisco," he is multiple characters in other series such as "Voltron" as well as "Rugrats."
