With 50 acres of awesome adventure, the Akron Zoo is home to more than 700 animals representing each of earth's seven continents. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Akron Zoo takes part in the breeding of many endangered species, including Sumatran tigers, snow leopards and Komodo dragons.
The zoo's website features a complete list of every species of animal located on the expansive campus.
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the zoo is divided into several areas including the “Wild Prairie,” which features river otters, elephants, giraffes and zebras; the “Lehner Family Gardens,” with its meticulously maintained flowers and trees; “Tiger Valley,” home to the massive striped felines, as well as bears, lions, cranes and flamingoes; “Komodo Kingdom and Jellies Rhythm in the Blue,” in which the rare reptiles, tortoises, jellyfish and stingrays are featured; and “Legends of the Wild,” where you can find condors, llamas, penguins, bats and snakes.
To tame your wild appetite, a variety of cafes and concession stands are located on-site. Family favorites like burgers, onion rings, pretzels, salads and ice cream are never hard to find.
Be sure to catch a ride on the zoo train, where for just $2 per person, you can take a riding tour the park. For extra fun, try feeding the farm animals for just a dollar, or penguins for just $3.
A variety of family-friendly programs and events occur weekly, so there is always something fun and exciting to do at the zoo. With activities like “pancakes with the penguins,” kids “pajama days” and “senior safari,” there is truly something for folks of all ages to enjoy.
